And re: his home depot application:
“You gotta get with it, do something that you love,” he said. “I’m an architect, I was an art major. At Home Depot, I get free discount on hammers and nails.”

Can someone go read Gladwell's piece at Grantland and tell me if it sucks or not?

Gladwell's piece would be more interesting if he even bothered to note that money means nothing to people in the position to buy a sports franchise, except in the sense that they measure themselves against their rich buddies with it. Well, owning that sports team sure makes your dick a lot bigger than buying a few more mansions.
The marginal utility of $500m to someone who has $1b+ is zero.

Beyond your issues, this really bothered me: Yawkey was not just a racist, in other words. He was a racist who put his hatred of black people ahead of his desire to make money. I mean today, sure as you said it's about dick size. But in effin 1950 he thinks Yawkey had the financial wherewithal to think he would make more money by signing African Americans? I end up redoing every single effin analysis someone else does today, in 2011. I cannot imagine the financial "analysis" he had available re: African Americans actually being a profitable investment. There is no way he knew this, no effin way. Gladwell's point is probably true that Yawkey wouldn't have cared, but he's completely kidding himself if he thinks he knew he was turning down money.

I think you're overcomplicating things a bit.
You can generally count on making more money when your team wins more games, can't you? And you can generally count on winning more games when your team has more good players, can't you?
Also, I don't agree with aoxo (and Gladwell) that money is completely out of the picture for people buying sports teams. It's entirely possible (and IMO reasonable) for them to make the decision to buy largely for the psychic benefits and yet still demand that the financial cost of these psychic benefits stops at the purchase price. And in practice, this seems to in fact be the way many owners run their teams.

1) I don't know if that was the case in 1950's Boston, where Racism didn't turn into Liberalism till well after the race riots of the 70's
2) Dolan is a case in your court, Cuban in aoxo's, hard to figure which side has more.

Oh and if you are a racist do you really "believe" African Americans win you more games?
If you are the delusional you can convince yourself of most anything.

Would it really have been a money making strategy to sign a bunch of black players in 1950s Boston?

I guess it's just difficult for me to imagine a time when owners didn't know their fans are collectively always full of shit when they pretend to care about anything but a player's ability to help them win games.
Ben Roethlisberger is probably a shitty human being. Browns fans would collectively lose their shit if we traded for him. But if he led us to a 10-win season, maybe a playoff appearance(!!!), pretty soon all you'd hear about is an Ohio kid's return home where he belongs(!!!), about how much he's matured, etc.
I'd just tend to assume that fans have always been this full of shit and owners have always known it.

Yeah, I should have included that point in my original post instead of pseudo working it in over the last two. I doubt it, but who knows.
The fact that Gladwell cites a national study done today as if it were shocking? important? news: re African Americans on the whole tells me he is surprised about the national reaction and failing to factor in geographical variables.

Understandable, but have you ever hated someone (and I mean hated) for superficial reasons? I doubt anyone here but OJ (douche) has. And I don't think any of us can know what was real then because of that.

If you are the delusional you can convince yourself of most anything. Undeniably true, but IMO more precisely stated as: lots of people are really good at deluding themselves into believing whatever it is they want to believe. Contradicting evidence only demands more creativity. Maybe a reframing. So my answer to your question, then, is that it depends what he wanted to believe. Did he want to believe black people were inferior athletes or just inferior human beings?

And I don't think any of us can know what was real then because of that. I don't know. In general, I'd say "superficial reasons" account for a pretty substantial portion (like 99%) of the hate in professional sports today. Maybe in the 1950s, if you own a Boston team, you'd worry that your fanbase might be especially and unusually loyal to that one superficial reason, but with how much justification, when you see it working out in other cities? Do you really just respond with skepticism that it could work out in Boston too? "1950s Other City X might be "racist," but we're rrrrrrracist!" <--missed opportunity for 1950s Tony the Tiger.

Well, how did you "know" it was working out in other cities? A player here and a player there doesn't stand as "UNDENIABLE IF YOU ARE LOONY EVIDENCE"
and more importantly,
Sports hate and racism hate are not interchangable.
LeBron James in Cleveland in front of a bunch of drunks is as "hated" as it got last year.
Ask Jackie Robinson how "hateful" that was.

Gladwell is a nitwit. Having bad hair and a halting speech pattern seems to have convinced people this jabbering fool is a genius.

Ya know, I found myself hoping flats would drive by yesterday to throw his bones into the "movies to see" thread and for this thread.
Instead he drives by and points out the obvious (BUT GLADWELL WROTE ABOUT AIRWALKS, AIRWALKS WERE AWERSOME) while ripping on me in another thread.

This lockout is killing. For me the NBA and basketball has so far surpassed the other leagues that it pains me to pay attention to them in any meaningful manner.
