Nevermind that Luck had an easy INT dropped that should have sealed the game. STUD!
16 INTs, 9 fumbles on the year.

STATS!
Comparing 2012 & 2002, a mere 10 years apart, but as we all know too well, there have been dramatic changes in the game since then. In 2002, you could do what today would be unthinkable! You could win a Super Bowl with a game manager at QB. That's some straight-up rotary-phone level shit right there.
Compare, for instance, the % of rush attempts for teams with winning records in 2012 to those in 2002. There were 14 & 16 teams with winning records in those years respectively. (League ranking in parentheses)
2012 vs. 2002:
56.9% (1st) vs. 53.8% (1st) 54.0% (2nd) vs. 52.2% (2nd) 53.0% (3rd) vs. 50.5% (3rd) 50.2% (5th) vs. 48.2% (8th) 49.2% (7th) vs. 47.2% (10th) 47.8% (9th) vs. 46.9% (12th) 44.9% (12th) vs. 46.1% (14th) 44.9% (13th) vs. 45.2% (16th) 44.3% (14th) vs. 45.2% (17th) 44.2% (15th) vs. 44.2% (19th) 43.7% (17th) vs. 43.7% (20th) 43.1% (18th) vs. 42.4% (22nd) 41.2% (22nd) vs. 42.3% (23rd) 38.1% (26th) vs. 42.2% (25th) xxxxxxxxxxxx vs. 40.1% (28th) xxxxxxxxxxxx vs. 39.5% (29th)
Way back in 2002, the 32 NFL teams combined to rush the ball on a today-unthinkable 44.9% of NFL plays (14102/31394). It's almost as though they weren't aware the forward pass had been invented.
Compare that to 2012, when that same number has plummeted to a paltry 43.9% of NFL plays (13925/31713). Practically 0%.

The most astonishing change in the nfl is that teams with hof caliber qbs now win lots of super bowls, instead of teams with hof caliber rbs. Its all because of the rule changes, which dictate that instead of the walter paytons filling their fingers, the joe montanas do.

You can't touch QBs anymore, you can't touch receivers anymore. QBs go unscathed while their receivers are just running free through timid NFL secondaries on play after play after play after play.
Yet your average NFL team in an average NFL game only responds by running the ball 0.62 less attempts a game than they did 10 years ago.
No wonder these coaches are always getting fired! They can't see the obvious!!!
MFA: Just using the bulk rushing numbers, your average NFL team in 2012 runs an average of 27.19 running plays a game, compared to 27.54 in 2002. The 0.62 number comes from using the same number of 2012 plays, multiplied by the 2012 & 2002 rushing %s.

Listening to these announcers, it's hard to believe Denver won a playoff game before Peyton got there and that Baltimore made the playoffs without Lewis.

The discerning NFL Fan will surely note that on Kaepernick's 13th of 16 carries for 181 yards today, one of the DBs was totally out of position to make a play, due to the rule changes and whatnot.

Also, a hahahahahahaha to 2011-John-Fox-wanters today.
3rd and 7, 2:00 remaining, Peyton Manning is your QB. Probably a good time to burn some clock with a loser run-playcall!
Tie game, 31 seconds remaining, two timeouts, Peyton Manning is your QB. KNEEL!

So here's the thing about all these fancy statisticians and their columns excoriating coaches with comments about expected points. And don't get me wrong, I am always screaming to go for it on fourth down and said atl should have gone for 2 when up 19. But its not enough to compare expected points. They need to consider the dispersion of outcome and the number of times these decisions might come up in games and how much time is left. It is entirely possible that settling for fewer expected but more certain points results in a higher probability of winning, either because you end up with more points over the course of 4 or 5 decisions or because it doesn't actually do you any good to win by larger margins.

And another thing: the praise over how innovative teams are for using the pistol is as big an indictment of nfl stagnancy/broup think as anything. How did it take teams until 2012 to realize "say, we can't run as well out of the shotgun and we can't pass as well from under center... what if we try splitting the difference? " The fact that a team didn't do this the game after the shotgun was first used ought to be an enormous embarrassment for the nfl and its legion of geniuses.

Yes, the NFL is stupidly conservative and conventional. My head still sneaks in an extra shake or two every now and then, when I remember the reaction to Belichick's 4th & 2 call vs. Indy.
John Fox's conservative approach = losing The Right Way.
Belichick's calculated aggression = that's what you get, Captain Smartypants!

I've laughed to myself many times since Ault announced his retirement. Guy is like 200 years old and invented the pistol offense long enough ago he's RETIRING, yet here... in 2012... IT'S INGENIOUS CREATIVITY!#%!@#%! to run it in the NFL.
