So should I restart my DirecTV in August and get Sunday Ticket? I was going to just find a bar, but it looks like the price has been slashed to $200 this year.

I wouldn't personally ever go with the bar option, but if I moved away from Cleveland, I'd have a very hard time spending an extra $200/yr to watch what they've been.
I that situation I think you get a free pass to abandon them until they're worth watching again.

Yeah, but I always manage to convince myself that they have finally got the ship righted.
I was definitely not going to get it again, since I was expecting over $400 based on previous prices and yearly increases. $200 seems cheap. Except for the whole $70/mo for DirecTV service on top of it.

Your DirecTV is only $70/mo?
Ms bwwyyyy handles all that stuff, but I swore she said ours was up to something like $100/mo now, and I don't think we have any special packages or anything. HD & DVR. Maybe we pay extra for all those Fox Sportseses?
Stupid TV. Other than a car, it might have the worst cost to return value ratio of anything out there*. And it just feels like too extreme of a choice to eliminate it altogether. Plus, then you'd have to be "Oh, me? I don't own a television" Person.
*-not there, but out...there!

It was 60.99 (choice) + 10 (HD) + 7 (DVR).
Netflix is $7.99. So I still get to own a tv, even if I've watched almost everything I want to stream on Netflix.
I also live right across the street from work, so I've considered selling my car. At the very least, I will keep it until it explodes. It's already over 10 years old.

Are you allowed to take a cab to and from the grocery store without being formally classified as an Old Lady?
^Complications.
Disclaimer: I have no idea if old ladies anywhere actually do this.

Yeah, but I would cheat. We would keep the wife's car.

Most likely, then, you'll instead be in an eternal "keep it until it explodes" cycle, as, upon the purchase of a new car for your wife, your wife's old car always becomes your new "keep it until it explodes" car.

If you are debating restarting your direct TV I would try getting Sunday Ticket with it for free first. Tell them that you are going to bundle cable with your local area option with your internet unless they give you ST at no charge. It may work.
I called Direct TV just before the past season and said I am going with Time Warner if I didn't get ST for free. I wasn't a dick to the guy on the phone, but I did explain how much more Direct TV was over Time Warner and that was without ST, and the only reason why I have Direct TV is ST. It worked and I am going to try it again in August.
I have been on the fence for almost a year as far as canceling cable. I have a 61 inch and rarely use it anymore. Like you said, seems like too extreme of an option to cancel. But it feels like throwing away $70 per month.

Yeah, I've heard about those kinds of strategies. Do they make you sign a new contract?

But it feels like throwing away $70 per month. If only there was a much-discounted 15-ish channel Sports & News Only Package. That would feel less like throwing money away, even as bad as Cleveland Sports are right now. I'd like to think that an à la carte system would make this possible, but I'd guess that'd just devolve into ESPN being dicks and charging $50/mo just for their package of channels.

Yeah, I've heard about those kinds of strategies. Do they make you sign a new contract? I signed my original two year contract with them ~4 years ago. I have not gotten into any other contract with them since then and have negotiated my bill down 3 times. Direct TV is expensive for people that do not stay on top of their bill.

Include the major networks and this would be my plan for sure. I'd prefer it if they'd offer a plan the way the internet use to be, and charge me for my usage every month. Still let me see what is on channels like AMC if I want to watch it, but I went all weekend with the only time the TV was on was the second half of game 7 Saturday night. ESPN's gamecast has been streaming the NBA playoffs when the game is on their station BTW. Soon that'll catch on with other networks.

An average of 4 hours and 39 minutes per day is so high. I would have guessed around 2 hours...
I'm currently at like 7 hours per week, but that will change once football gets back and it gets cold out again.

In a normal week this time of year, I'm about the same, but it wouldn't be too tough to hit that average, I'd guess, if you were an NBA and/or MLB fan.

4 hours and 39 minutes of baseball per day sounds like cruel and unusual punishment.

Include the major networks and this would be my plan for sure. You can get the major networks in HD for free over the air. Well, most people can. Some locations the signal doesn't come in.

Sunday Ticket is more that just Browns games for me. It gives me more choices of what to flip to during commercials which seem to compose 25% or more of the broadcast these days. It also gives me options beyond the local TV offering for what I can watch during non-Browns times.
I love Sunday Ticket.

Do those neanderthals let you stream NFL games yet?
I can get 2500 baseball games live with replays on demand for like $120 with a mobile app to boot. Sunday Ticket is such a freaking scam.

2500 x 2.75hr = 6875hr
6875/52 = 132hr/wk
132/7 = 18.9hr/day
18.9/24 = 78.7% of JayAre's day is spent in complete silence.
Dreams = loud by comparison

Not having cable is easy if you have XBox Live, Hulu Plus, HBO Go and Netflix.... really easy.
Throw in NBA League Pass in the winter and HUZZAH
