Yeah, it was a freak injury. But if he scores 40+ with the mask on, someone should keep punching him in the jaw to keep that fucker injured.

The best part of this Lakers season is going to be when we get their lottery pick.

How is it possible for someone to write this with a straight face? He seems concerned only with helping underprivileged families both at this Heat-sanctioned event and at his own foundation's Thanksgiving event later that evening.
So Bosh hops in the back of his black Mercedes Sprinter, which can only be described as a sophisticated party bus, complete with flat-screen TVs lining the walls and limousine-style seating.

If Thompson had even average NBA ability to finish at the rim, he would have a good future. But damn, what a disaster.

I've never seen someone with so much spring suck so bad at dunking and blocking shots.

I think he's growing on the defensive end, and the offensive end too. It's just the damn finishing. Yeah, not being able to dunk the ball is a bewildering problem. But it's not just dunking, he can't finish with any moves and seems to just have no feel for the defense around him.
The thing that bugs me the most about Waiters is: what are these teams thinking that keep trying to pair up a star PG and star SG? Has that EVER worked? So assume Waiters is awesome; how is that supposed to work? I know their hand may have been forced by positioning, by damn would someone like MKG look good on this roster.
I do think they have the core of a good team in place with those three guys + Zeller. But having to run out Gee/Miles/Pargo and Luke Fucking Walton for extended minutes is just awful.

I mean for fuck's sake, Luke Walton? Is there a bigger joke in professional sports than Luke Walton being a key rotation guy? He is just beyond awful. And they are playing him 20+ minutes a night lately!

I just don't see SG as an important position. At all. In fact, having a star SG is a detriment to the team. It is the least efficient position on offense, and the least useful position on defense. These guys are ball hogs who are streaky and hurt their team.
Barring having a transcedent, super elite (beyond HOF) SG, of which there have been 3 or 4 (if you count Wade), you do NOT want a star SG. And Kobe has been hugely problematic because of his position!
There is a reason there are never more than a couple of really good SGs in the league at a time. Because the position does not lend itself to making a quality impact. There are always far more SGs that have good skills but are net negatives, especially considering they get paid for their skills and not net impact.

Has anyone done any work on whether high/low variance players exist and their impact on wins/losses, especially when combining into a team?

Better to have a bunch of steady guys who put up the same thing every night, or to mix in a guy or two who explodes/disappears? Does that change in a 7 game series vs over 82?

On mu phone and limited, but pairing Kyrie with a SG that can't shoot is more problematic than the two star theory.

True, I suppose with a Ray Allen/Reggie Miller type it would work well.

Thompson played well tonight, actually converted in the paint. Yeah, by far his best game. That new skinny guy they picked up a week or so ago played well also. Had a nice steal / dunk... Now they just need to learn to hold on to those 18 point leads.

This was actually a really smart trade. Second best move of his tenure outside of somehow getting the Clippers stoned so they forgot to top three protect their loto pick.

The irving pick was great; it was not obvious at the time and there was a substantial bloc that favored williams. Williams stinks. The thompson pick is also looking great; none of the other guys available have shown didly. Obviously that could change, since they were all high potential type picks.

I also liked the zeller pick, although he is playing way too much and is not ready on defense. Waiters at least has shown he is not afraid of the moment and has the potential to be a quality to star level sg. He just needs to improve his shot selection, which is atrocious, and knock off all the isos.

A blind moron knew Kyrie was the pick. Bullshit media hype around Williams and Knight doesn't make the pick anything but a no-brainer.

Williams over Kyrie would have been even worse than the Weeden pick.

And from what I can remember from some casual boxscore stalking, it seems that Kawhi's had some pretty big games when Popovich sits all his starz. What could he be for the Cavaliers?
