Watched Walken's two newest movies and Gangster Squad...
Stand Up Guys was ok. Nothing spectacular, nothing terrible. Just ok. Walken and Pacino are what you would expect from Walken and Pacino. Story was kind of meh, but whatever. It killed 2 hours.
Seven Psychopaths was very meh. Very meh. One of those movies that is completely different from how it is portrayed in the trailers because the studio knows it is very meh.
Gangster Squad was good. I wouldn't spend 8 bucks on it at a theater, but it will be worth a rent when it gets to Netflix or whatever rental method you prefer. Gosling, Penn, and Brolin are all good in it for whatever that is worth.

Argo: Heh-
I haven't seen Gone Baby Gone or the Town. Shame on me. After watching this, I should take Affleck seriously as a director. Just like Zero Dark Thirty, if you're able to create tension in a film in which the ending is known, I gotta give you some credit. It's not an earth shattering piece of work, but it's solid. Also Alan Arkin.
Flight : meh+ Finally saw this, Denzel's preformance is ultimately better than the movie, but it's really not bad at all. John Goodman's character is funny in small doses and thankfully they don't over do it.
The Last Stand: feh
Had to check out the Governator's return to the big screen in a starring role. Holy shit was this movie terrible. The only way it didn't get the dreaded "feh-" was the sheer amount of unintended laughs juxtaposed with the amount of jokes that garnered no laughs. It was fucking uncanny. I actually felt bad for Johnny Knoxville - a man who has made his career doing demeaning and painful shit to himself.
Pain and Gain: meh+
Really surprised here. Michael Bay. But I have to be honest: you get this film an editor, trim out about a half hour of sag in the middle, you 'll have a something really good. Honest. I've always liked the Rock; ever since I had a marijuana/N64-fueled WWF renaissance back in college. He's good here.
Iron Man 3: meh +
I almost didn't put the plus on there. It starts off really bad. For the first 15-20 minutes or so, I thought it was gonna really suck. It did eventually find its stride. Shane Black co-wrote and directed this. He came to fame in the 80s as an action movie screenwriter. He was also the pussy-joke guy in Predator. His directorial debut was Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, one of the RDJr comeback movies. I really liked that one, perfectly written for Downey Jr. So I thought that, if nothing else, we'd get some great dialogue and jokes tailor-made for him . Not so, which is my biggest complaint. He's kind of a dick in this. Lots of jokes that just don't work. You fix that, and this could be really good.
It's still better than the second one. Sir Ben Kingsley is great. And it's always good to see fan-favorite Miguel Ferrer still working.
Star Trek in two weeks.
Also recently been on a sci-fi kick with the home viewing; Moon (2009), Sunshine (2007), and Primer (2004). All good stuff.

Mud: Heh-
The kids stole the movie. All the others made it better. Like how McConaughey did not stay with the RomComs. Michael Shannon in a nothing role makes it all the better. My highest rating to date!!1!!!?!/! Excitement, feel it!

I am surprised by how many movies I have seen this summer. Here goes it:
The Place Beyond the Pines: meh + Yeah this leaves you empty and cold. I didn't mind the way the story was told in three parts: Gosling's part, Cooper's part, their sons part. Solid casting. I was surprised how perfect Coopers son played the role. Gosling was very gosling which means he conveys much with minimal words. Not for the easily depressed.
Iron Man 3: meh- I agree with bob on two things: it was better than the boring IM2 and Ben Kingsley was perfect. Everything else pretty much sucked...like Guy Pearce's mullet. It was boring and stupid and I think I'm done with comic book movies. I'm tired.
Star Trek 2: meh+ Maybe I liked this because I saw it a week after IM3 and it was such a better movie. Maybe I liked this because I am not a Trekkie and I figured this one would piss off all the Trekkie fans. Either way, give Abrams credit for making a summer popcorn movie that was well paced from beginning to end. It wasn't a perfect film. Had some issues with the three endings they strung together. Spock is like a superhero which is too convenient of a plot fixer. But it was fine for summer blockbuster-y type (lens) flare.
Man of Steel: meh- Rotten Tomatoes must have an agenda against this movie. For example, Fast 6 got a 70-something and MoS is in the upper 50s. It was a flawed movie but not as bad as RT makes it out to be. I've seen such spitfire over MoS. Sure, there is a giant plot hole, a forced Lois Lane, and too many frowny-foreheads from Cavil...but it was better than Superman Returns and all the 80s Supermans. I don't know why they keep trying to make Superman work on film. Will always come across wrong, no matter what. Now, I'm done with comic book movies.
World War Zzzzzzz: meh- Most boring zombie flick I've seen. Boring. There isn't a character you give two shits about. Nothing to care about. No real tense zombie moments. Maybe it's because we've seen it all...like with comic book movies. But this thing was lifeless. To put it in perspective, Soderbergs Contagion created greater tension around much more developed characters without needing cgi zombies masses that don't ever seem threatening. I was incredibly disappointed with the movie and Brad Pitts annoying ass hair cut.

They must show Brad Pitt's ass hair to bring in the female audience.

To put it in perspective, Soderbergs Contagion created greater tension around much more developed characters without needing cgi zombies masses that don't ever seem threatening. I was incredibly disappointed with the movie and Brad Pitts annoying ass hair cut. Funny, I just logged on to write up the last three. I agree with NFG on pretty much all of this, though I liked about the first 30 minutes of WWZ, but got-damn what a boring climax/resoluton sequence. I also was more annoyed by the contrivances of Man of Steel than he was. I was a big Watchmen fan and I had real hope for this one. The child Clark Kent/pre-Superman stuff had some potential, but the whole intro was CGI overkill-Russell Crowe crap and the third act had a lot of hard to follow (visually) scenes coupled with the aforementioned plot holes. Also: This Is The End: Heh- It really hinged on how much you like these actors. I've always thought McBride was hilarious and generally like the rest of the cast. It's a ridiculous movie, and it runs out of steam a little bit towards the end. But there's some funny cameos and I have to admit that I laughed plenty. Pacific Rim in two weeks.

Like with standard Redford flare we are being told that this is "epic" and "dazzling" and "spectacular"...which translates to standard Redford reality: boring as hell.

The new Woody Allen is supposed to be really, really awesome. Better than Midnight in Paris/throwback awesome (and I enjoyed Midnight in Paris).
Opens here this weekend so I'll be seeing it sooner rather than later.
Also, Pacific Rim is still awesome.

Yeah, and e0's right about Pacific Rim (meh+), just totally unplug your brain first.
Also Elysium: meh
Pretty yet predictable, really disappointed. I liked District 9. The class thing was heavy handed and I'm so sick of the slow-motion-with- weird-chanting-shot thing. Ridley Scott started it in the early 00s with Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, and Kingdom of Heaven. It worked then, but goddamn is it trite at this point. This shit is what I mean:
Kick Ass 2 next week

Kick Ass 2 : meh+
Man this one got fuckin poleaxed by the critics. 28%? Damn.
Yes, it doesn't feel as fresh as the first one. And yes, some of the jokes don't work (particularly a gross-out gag about halfway through, like something out of a recent Adam Sandler movie). And maybe it's a little bit confused about its identity.
But still, I enjoyed it. It is fun and I definitely think fans of the first would like it. I'll bet e0 will.
I just can't get past how critically reviled it is, 28% is like recent Adam Sandler movie territory. I wish Ebert was still around, I'd like to read his take on it.

I'LL EAT A DICK BEFORE I SUPPORT JIM CAREY BEING GAY WITH GUNS THEN REFUSING TO ACCEPT THAT THEY EXIST.
Plus there is no way this movie doesn't suck. Literally no way. New writing staff, new director, new gay lead that isn't Nick Cage. Nothing about this is good.
I'll eat a dick if I like it, really. Especially because that cunt Jimmey Boy turned it into a political endeavor. Fuck this movie and everything about it. Sorry you mentioned this first in front of me bob, but again, fuck this movie.
I'd rather watch a 48 hour marathon of The Vineyard on ABC Family.
